From plastic waste to spreaders of happpiness

I’m working on a methode to use plastic waste in a slightly different way and would like to hear your idea’s an suggestions about it. I don’t melt the plastic but use it as a  substance to create my ‘spreaders of happiness’

Hi my name is Gert-jan Vlaming and I’m artist from the Lowlands. More than 10 years ago I designed a little statue  (Phing-Thing) more or less by accident. The thing is that is makes people happy, if the see it the want to pick it up an hold it. I have been doing big an small art projects with it trough the years, from exhibitions where they are painted by different artist till putting a 1000 of them in a park.

One of the most important thing about the Phing-Things is that every thing around them is done in a fair way and that it helps people who are involved. Now they are made of plaster and wood. Plaster Phing-Things are made by ex homeless people and the wooden ones are made on Fairtrade basis in Indonesia.

Our big wish is to have them made out of recycled plastic. I have been looking into this for a long time, but the investments (especially the mold) where to expensive to start the project at this moment. Now I have come up with an idea to stil use plastic waste but not by melting it. I started to experiment by putting shredded pieces plastic into the plaster and make Phing-Things out of this substance.

I did one test with bits of plastic and that worked really well. In the up coming weeks I will try more and different kinds of plastic. I would love to hear if some one has some experience with combining plaster and plastic to make stuf. I will keep you posted from my progress and my experiments.

Please leave your suggestions our remarks
