How clean to plastics need to be to extrude

I am starting a project up with my school. The plan is to educate students, collect clean plastics, shred it, melt it and turn it into 3-d filament so our school can always use our 3-d printer. I plan on building the machines when school ends so I already am living in a sea of plastics. I am curious how clean the plastics have to be such as sticker residue and other things. I would also love any tips for this upcoming adventure!

Thanks so much!!!

hi @layne
TO give you the right answer I will need more informations. Like: With polymer are you planning to use (ABS, PLA)?
I’ve been working with polymers at last 8 years. This is not the best way to make filaments for 3d printers. In my opinion the kids must make toys (as shown in videos), they will enjoy more.
