Looking for guidance to buildbuy these machines in Hawaii

Aloha! I represent a small group of students working on behalf of Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii (SCH), a non-profit dedicated to keeping our beaches clean.

SCH collects over 15,000 pounds of ocean plastics per year. This plastic is separated from trash, bagged and shipped to partners in California that chip it down, form it into pellets, melt it and mix it with post-consumer plastic to create recycled plastic products.

We’re studying the feasibility of capturing more of this value chain on-island, and would like to implement Dave’s technology here. We have two specific questions for the forums:

1. What would be the best kind of chipper/shredder for hard HDPE ocean plastic (with items sized up to 3×3 feet)?

2. What are approximate costs to build machines at the scale Dave is building? Including shredder, extrusion, injection and rotational machines.

We’re hoping the forum members can help us shed some light on these questions!

Mahalo for your time,

Hi Phil good to hear you want to get started on Hawaii!
1: The items aren’t solid right? We’ve designed a small shredder that can shred up to a size of the bottle. If it’s bigger you might need to pre-cut it first, or build a bigger shredder.
2: We are working on a detailed outline of all the costs, hard to make up since materials are different all over the world.

Personally I would recommend to focus on one technique/machine first. So a shredder + 1 other machine. Get to fully understand that machine and maximize the output.

Either way, good luck!

Aloha Phil!

I am on Kauai and am just getting started making a plastic recycling operation happen. What island are you on?

some precious plastic member use this easy shredder…
