Recycling nylon from ropes

We have access to a large amount of nylon ropes that have come to the end of their life, they are between 8mm to 14mm thick. The ropes are fairly clean but will have some foreign particles in them. I’m looking for ideas on how to prepare them to go into an extruder. The ropes are made up of a core and a sheath, the fibers making up the rope are very fine and putting the rope into a normal shredder would likely just clog it up. If it was shredded up the fine fivers would be very light and high friction, (a bit like cotton-wool) making it difficult to feed into a precious-plastic type extruder.
